What is this call about?

The call funds pilots of advanced distribution management software that helps distribution system operators integrate distributed energy resources, reduce congestion and coordinate with transmission operators.

What does this call fund?

Scope

This Horizon Innovation Action advances the design and operation of advanced distribution management systems used by distribution system operators (DSOs).

Expected activities

  • Design and test innovative solutions, architectures, technologies and processes for these systems.
  • Provide software platforms that improve grid performance and controllability and integrate distributed energy resources efficiently, reducing congestion and increasing flexibility.
  • Improve forecasting of supply, demand and flexibility, with advanced analytics and visualisation.
  • Advance interoperability with transmission system operators, other DSOs and distributed energy resources at the edge of the grid.
  • Use digital twins, artificial intelligence, security by design and, as far as possible, open-source software.
  • Produce a manual and best practices for other DSOs and identify remaining research needs.

Expected outcomes

More reliable, resilient, controllable and efficient distribution grids, effective congestion management, better interoperability, and vendor-agnostic reference architectures and tools. Activities are expected to reach TRL 6-8 by the end of the project.
