Advancements in Direct Air Capture
Horizon Europe · Cluster 5 – Climate, Energy and Mobility · HORIZON-CL5-2027-02-D3-30
Funding to scale up direct air capture of CO2 to pilot demonstration with lower cost and energy use.
This call is announced but not open yet. Dates and conditions can still change.
What is this call about?
The call funds innovation actions that scale up direct air capture technologies to pilot demonstration, improving cost, materials, energy use and flexible operation with renewable power.
What does this call fund?
Scope
Projects should scale up existing direct air capture (DAC) solutions to at least pilot demonstration in relevant environments (TRL 7 or higher). They are expected to demonstrate:
- Better cost efficiency of the capture and regeneration process, including balance of plant
- Better material performance and process designs, such as capacity, kinetics, durability and long-term stability in air
- Potential for manufacturing and scale-up, including recycling and reuse of materials
- Flexible operation with intermittent or surplus renewable energy
Further issues, depending on the technology
- Lower energy use for sorbent or solvent regeneration and alternative CO2 separation materials and approaches
- Materials for DAC systems working in cold, humid or heavily polluted conditions
- Accuracy of simulations compared with validation experiments, and new high-flux air contactor designs
Required assessment
Projects must carry out a full life cycle assessment of the DAC system, from material extraction and energy use to greenhouse gas emissions and end-of-life.
Expected outcome
Faster commercial availability of direct air capture technologies.
