The call funds research and innovation actions that improve the understanding, modelling, prediction and attribution of climate-related extreme events in Europe and globally.

Scope

Actions should improve understanding and prediction of extreme events under climate change, drawing on a hierarchy of models (including high-resolution Earth system models and digital twins) and on data about past and recent climate. Innovative methods, including AI-based approaches, are welcome.

Work expected

• Cover isolated, compound and cascading extreme events, from continental to local scale
• Carry out quantitative intercomparisons, retrospective analyses and case studies of recent extreme events
• Show progress in seamless prediction and projection, from short-term weather to multi-decadal scales
• Support the future European Climate Risk Assessment and the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change

Expected outcomes

Better understanding of past and present extreme events and of interactions between hazards, stronger prediction, projection and attribution capabilities, and up-to-date input to climate science, risk assessments, adaptation policies and early warning systems.

Cooperation

Cooperation with disaster risk reduction and adaptation actors, including links to Copernicus and Destination Earth, is encouraged. Selected consortia will be asked to coordinate with projects under ESA's FutureEO programme and should budget for this coordination. The Joint Research Centre may be involved.
