Scope
This Horizon Research and Innovation Action investigates and quantifies the effects of airport operations on air quality, noise, water bodies and local ecology near airports.
Expected activities
- Comprehensive real-time, real-world measurements of exhaust and non-exhaust pollutants and noise, differentiating sources, covering ground operations, landing and take-off, and cruise-related engine tests.
- Demonstrated calibration of measurement systems and reproducible results.
- Pilot testing at 2 different airports near urban or rural communities and water bodies, with the possibility of testing other complex transport nodes.
- Investigation of health and environmental effects, including biodiversity, of particles, NOx and non-regulated emissions, supported by gender-disaggregated data and intersectional analysis.
- Estimates of the effect of auxiliary or ground power units on emissions and noise of stationary aircraft.
Expected outcomes
An assessment of airport impacts on air and water quality, better emission factors for inventories and emission reduction plans, recommendations for measurement certification and testing, and a method to assess health impacts of pollutants and noise. Activities are expected to reach TRL 5-6 by the end of the project.
