Biotechnology application for CCU
Horizon Europe · Cluster 6 – Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment · HORIZON-CL6-2027-01-CIRCBIO-08
Funding to develop and demonstrate biotechnologies that turn captured gaseous carbon into industrial feedstock.
This call is announced but not open yet. Dates and conditions can still change.
What is this call about?
The topic funds innovation actions that develop and demonstrate biotechnological ways to capture and convert gaseous carbon into industrial feedstock, excluding food, feed and biofuels.
What does this call fund?
Scope
Projects develop life sciences-based technologies, using synthetic biology and/or living microorganisms, to capture, purify and convert gaseous carbon from industrial emissions or the atmosphere into feedstock for products. Food, feed, biofuels and syngas are excluded as products.
Activities
- Review progress in life sciences-based carbon capture and use and assess technological readiness and carbon storage potential in products.
- Develop and test technologies that concentrate, purify and convert gaseous carbon efficiently.
- Carry out a preliminary assessment of environmental impacts, social and economic viability, scalability and markets.
- Demonstrate the most sustainable technology or technologies, assess replication potential with recommendations for SMEs and industry, and assess the feasibility of a spin-off.
Expected outcomes
Improved and scaled-up purification and conversion of gaseous carbon to supply industrial processes, and a contribution of biotechnology-based industries to climate neutrality. Activities are expected to reach TRL 6-7 and may start at any TRL.
