Scope
The topic supports implementation of the EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation, expected to start in 2027. Projects develop innovations and knowledge that make carbon farming certification cheaper, more harmonised and easier to apply on the ground.
Activities
- Develop innovations for certification using advanced technologies such as machine learning, AI, blockchain, Earth observation and IoT, and improve cooperation among data holders to cut administrative burden.
- Maintain open-access lists of models, sampling protocols and emission factor datasets to harmonise benchmarks and improve greenhouse gas inventories.
- Build capacity among land managers, certification schemes and certification bodies based on early implementation experience.
- Raise awareness among potential users, buyers and financiers of carbon farming and help them access data.
- Collect feedback on obstacles to certification and propose improvements to methodologies, verification rules and incentives.
Expected outcomes
A single, low-cost monitoring, reporting and verification system for carbon farming, wider use of certification at scale, and better technical support for actors involved. Activities are expected to reach TRL 5 by the end of the project.
