Circularity of seafood supply chain
Horizon Europe · HORIZON-MISS-2027-03-OCEAN-02
Funds demonstrations of circular solutions in fisheries and aquaculture, such as valorising by-products and alternative organic feed.
This call is announced but not open yet. Dates and conditions can still change.
What is this call about?
The call funds innovation actions that demonstrate circular solutions in fisheries and aquaculture, such as turning by-products into high-value compounds or developing organic alternatives to fish meal and fish oil. Projects involve actors across the whole seafood value chain.
What does this call fund?
Scope
The topic aims to make the European seafood industry more competitive and sustainable by applying circular economy principles to aquaculture and/or fisheries. Seafood covers marine and freshwater edible organisms, including seaweed and algae. Proposals should test and demonstrate the technical feasibility, economic viability and effectiveness of circular solutions that also create local jobs, business opportunities and skills.
Proposals should address at least one of the following
- Methods for extracting high-value compounds and valorising by-products from unavoidable unwanted catches or waste (for example fish sludge, trimmings, viscera, shells and algal residues) for uses such as animal feed, food, fertilisers, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, biotech, bioplastics and bio-based packaging. Alternative energy and pharmaceutical applications are excluded.
- Innovative organic feed ingredients as alternatives to fish meal and fish oil that support good growth and feed conversion ratio.
Further requirements
- At least three real-life use cases per project.
- Digital tools and predictive models to monitor pollution and improve waste management.
- One sea basin or Mission lighthouse per proposal, with cross-sector involvement of producers, processors, technology providers and researchers.
- Respect for animal welfare, ecosystem health and the EU organic production rules.
Expected outcomes
Measurable gains in competitiveness and sustainability, less and better managed waste, fewer barriers to circular practices and socio-economic benefits for local communities. Activities are expected to reach TRL 6 to 8 by the end of the project.
