What is this call about?

The topic funds industry-driven innovation actions that demonstrate carbon management, clean energy use and circularity solutions in energy-intensive industries.

What does this call fund?

Scope

The topic funds innovation actions that demonstrate technologies to decarbonise energy-intensive industries and bring cost-effective clean products to market. It implements the Processes4Planet and Clean Steel partnerships.

Technology areas

Proposals select one main area, or combine them within an industrial sector:

  • carbon cycle management: capture, use or storage of CO2 or CO from energy-intensive installations, targeting a 30% cut in energy input per tonne compared with current technologies
  • clean energy use in production: electrification, alternative clean energy carriers such as hydrogen, on-site renewable storage and waste heat use
  • circularity and resource efficiency of material, energy and water, targeting a 30% improvement by 2035

Project structure

Proposals are expected to include a go/no-go point before the contracting and demonstration phase, by which projects are expected to deliver detailed engineering plans, a techno-economic assessment, all permits for the demonstrator, a full business plan and a market-readiness strategy naming the industrial partners that will lead deployment.

Expected outcomes

Faster uptake of decarbonisation technologies, new first-of-a-kind demonstrators in Europe, and demonstrated market readiness of clean products through a credible business plan.

Technology readiness

Activities are expected to start at TRL 6 and reach TRL 7 to 8 by the end of the project.
