Understanding the nature and the extent of the effects of PFAS on biodiversity and ecosystem services
Horizon Europe · HORIZON-NATURE-2027-01-01
Funding for research on how PFAS pollution harms species, ecosystems and ecosystem services, to guide environmental and health policy.
Di cosa tratta questo bando?
The topic funds research into the effects of PFAS pollution on species, ecosystems and ecosystem services, including their economic valuation, to support policy decisions. Projects must involve social sciences and humanities expertise.
Cosa finanzia questo bando?
Scope
The topic funds research on how PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and their breakdown products affect species, populations, ecosystems and ecosystem services, to close knowledge gaps identified by a European Commission study published in January 2026.
Activities
- Field-based studies, possibly combined with controlled studies, on short- and long-term and multi-generational effects on key species and whole ecosystems.
- Robust methods to assess and, where relevant, economically value the impact of PFAS on ecosystem services, including estimates of costs from lost ecosystem services.
- A justified selection of PFAS substances or groups and of the environmental media concerned, such as soil, water, rain, sea foam, polar areas, oceans or air.
- Attention to bioaccumulation, biomagnification, combined exposure with other toxic substances, chronic exposure and tissue-specific accumulation.
- Study of less-researched organisms and fragile habitats, including plants used for phytoremediation.
- Ecosurveillance approaches and indicator species for monitoring damaged ecosystems and their recovery.
- Identification of remaining knowledge gaps and recommendations for policy.
Requirements
The topic requires contributions from social sciences and humanities, especially for valuation of ecosystem services and policy uptake. Data should be FAIR. Selected projects form a cluster with a dedicated work package and budget for joint activities and cooperation with the EC Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity.
Expected outcomes
Better mechanistic understanding of PFAS effects on biodiversity and ecosystems, clearer research needs, and knowledge that policymakers can use in decisions on nature protection, environmental and health protection and cost-benefit analysis of PFAS measures.
