Efficient energy input from renewable sources and energy management in the process industries (IA) (Processes4Planet and Innovative Advanced Materials for the EU partnerships)
Horizon Europe · Cluster 4 – Digital, Industry and Space · HORIZON-CL4-2027-02-MAT-PROD-32-TWO-STAGE
Funding to cut process industry emissions by at least 20% through renewable energy input, storage and smarter energy management.
What is this call about?
The topic funds projects that decarbonise the process industries through renewable energy input, energy storage and integrated energy management, demonstrated at pilot scale. It targets industrial consortia in energy-intensive sectors.
What does this call fund?
Scope
The topic funds innovation that cuts the carbon footprint of the process industries by at least 20%, through electrification and other renewable energy sources, lower energy demand, energy efficiency and energy integration. Projects should take the variability of renewable energy into account and develop solutions that include novel storage technologies relevant to the process industries. Pure demand-side management through adapted production schedules is outside the scope.
Areas proposals should address (several of the following)
- Greater use of renewable energy in production processes with improved efficiency.
- Integrated energy systems with novel storage so plants run smoothly despite variable renewable supply.
- Solutions for low and medium temperature (100-500 °C) energy inputs, including hybrid solutions that progressively reduce fossil fuel use.
- Solutions for high temperature (above 500 °C) inputs, including electrified processes and high-temperature storage.
- High-performance insulation and new advanced materials for heat capture, storage and retrieval that minimise critical raw materials and can be recycled.
Requirements
- Pilot-scale demonstrations, preferably in real industrial environments.
- A business case, exploitation strategy and exploitation plan with feasibility study, business plan and financial model, naming possible funding sources such as the Innovation Fund, InvestEU and cohesion funds.
- A greenhouse gas avoidance methodology is recommended.
Technology readiness
Activities start at TRL 4-5 and reach TRL 6-7. The topic implements the Processes4Planet and Innovative Advanced Materials for the EU partnerships.
