Enhancing ecodesign and circularity of consumer electronics
Horizon Europe · Cluster 6 – Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment · HORIZON-CL6-2027-01-CIRCBIO-01
Funding to develop and demonstrate durable, repairable and recyclable designs for consumer electronics.
This call is announced but not open yet. Dates and conditions can still change.
What is this call about?
The topic funds innovation actions that develop and demonstrate ecodesign of consumer electronics for durability, repair, disassembly and recycling. It also covers incentives and business models that reward circular design.
What does this call fund?
Scope
Electrical and electronic equipment is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the EU, and value is lost when devices cannot be repaired, batteries cannot be replaced or materials are not recovered. Projects develop, test and demonstrate better ecodesign of consumer electronics.
Activities
- Design for durability, reuse, repairability, disassembly, separability, recyclability and use of recycled content, including reuse of components and solutions targeting critical and strategic raw materials.
- Assess mechanisms and incentives that reward design for circularity and durability, such as extended guarantees or VAT reductions.
- Test and demonstrate business models such as leasing and product-service systems where they reinforce better design.
- Evaluate environmental performance over the life cycle, using the product environmental footprint method where applicable.
Expected outcomes
Manufacturers apply ecodesign and design-for-recycling principles, and consumers benefit from durable, repairable, upgradable and recyclable products with more recycled content.
Other conditions
Solutions must follow safe-and-sustainable-by-design principles and comply with legislation such as RoHS. Consumer benefits are central to the topic, and an effective contribution of social sciences and humanities is required. Activities are expected to reach TRL 6-8.
