What is this call about?

The call funds the development of a European full-stack trapped-ion quantum computer with more than 1,000 qubits, integrated with HPC and offered through cloud access. One project is expected to be funded.

What does this call fund?

Scope

The action supports the scale-up of European trapped-ion quantum computing platforms towards technological maturity for industrial and scientific use. It must address at least two major technical roadblocks defined in the SRIA 2030 for trapped-ion computing, such as limited scalability of ion trap architectures (modular designs, inter-chain coupling) and the integration of photonic components for laser delivery.

Expected outcomes

  • A full-stack ion-trap quantum computer aiming at more than 1,000 qubits, fully integrated into HPC systems and accessible via the cloud.
  • Quantum advantage demonstrated for selected real-world applications and validated against benchmarks.
  • Advanced error correction and fault-tolerant techniques implemented and demonstrated.
  • Integrated hardware-software systems with standardised and certified interfaces, and open access for industry and academia.

Activities

  • Develop the machine with initialisation, manipulation and readout integrated into the cryogenic setup, and a smaller footprint through standardised interfaces and integrated waveguides.
  • Develop and benchmark error correction codes for trapped-ion architectures and demonstrate error mitigation.
  • Implement at least two practical use cases and show computational advantage, or progress towards it, over classical simulation.
  • Define hardware and software interface specifications and align with European standardisation, benchmarking and certification work.
  • Enable hybrid quantum-classical workflows with remote access, and support researchers and industry, including SMEs, with cloud access, documentation and training.
  • Strengthen the European supply chain for lasers, ion traps, control electronics and packaging.

Technology readiness

Activities are expected to start at TRL 4 and reach TRL 7 by the end of the project.
