Scope

The topic aims to improve the circularity of the footwear value chain and reduce the environmental footprint of post-consumer footwear that would otherwise be landfilled.

Activities

• Assess the technical, environmental, economic and social challenges and benefits of collecting, sorting and recycling post-consumer footwear.
• Develop and test methods and technologies for collection, sorting, preparation for reuse and recycling, using digital tools including AI and the Digital Product Passport, and limiting hazardous chemicals and microplastics.
• Explore business models that support design for reuse and recycling, take-back schemes and informed consumer choices.
• Test solutions that improve cooperation between manufacturers, retailers, consumers and waste managers.

Expected outcomes

Better understanding of circularity in the footwear industry, cost-effective and scalable solutions for end-of-life footwear, and easy ways for consumers to dispose of used shoes correctly. Activities are expected to reach TRL 4-5 and may start at any TRL.

• Proposals should bring together the footwear value chain, including industry, SMEs, brand owners, producers, retailers, local authorities, waste managers, consumer organisations, researchers and NGOs.
