Integrated Approaches for Retrofitting Infrastructures with Innovative Energy Storage Technologies
Horizon Europe · Cluster 5 – Climate, Energy and Mobility · HORIZON-CL5-2027-07-D3-27
Funding for demonstrations of energy storage built into retrofitted old infrastructure such as dams, closed power plants and mines.
This call is announced but not open yet. Dates and conditions can still change.
What is this call about?
The call funds demonstrations of energy storage technologies installed in retrofitted obsolete infrastructure such as old dams, closed power plants, mines or former industrial sites.
What does this call fund?
Scope
This Horizon Innovation Action demonstrates novel or improved energy storage solutions that are cost-efficient, circular and sustainable, support grid flexibility and reuse obsolete or outdated energy or other infrastructure.
What proposals should cover
- Synergies between new or improved storage technologies and the retrofitting of old infrastructure, such as old hydropower dams and basins, decommissioned power plants, former industrial facilities, coal mines or fossil fuel infrastructure.
- Optimisation of storage capacity and efficiency together with circularity and socio-economic and environmental sustainability, for example through stakeholder outreach and assessment of environmental impacts.
- A secure-by-design approach with built-in security in the energy systems.
Expected outcomes
Better energy security through cost-effective, flexible storage capacity, more sustainable and circular storage systems, and improved economic viability of storage by using existing infrastructure. Activities are expected to reach TRL 6-8 by the end of the project.
Further expectations
- Selected projects are expected to contribute to the BRIDGE initiative.
