Que finance cet appel ?
Scope
Renewable energy valleys are decentralised renewable energy systems that produce and use energy locally, reducing grid losses and fuel imports and improving energy security and costs. Each action should cover an urban or a rural context in Africa and should:
- Design, build, commission and operate a demonstration installation, covering energy needs, consumption, grid stability and grid reinforcement in the region
- Develop a tailored local value chain approach based on local materials and workforce, with African SMEs playing an important role
- Identify workforce training needs and propose training and qualification activities
- Define a market and business strategy that considers European and international financing and development finance instruments
- Include a cradle-to-grave life cycle analysis and a circular economy approach, with mitigation of any negative impacts
The work should follow a Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus approach and consider regulation and local community governance.
Expected outcomes
Stronger EU-AU cooperation on climate change and sustainable energy, faster progress on African countries' Paris Agreement targets, wider roll-out of local renewable energy systems for electricity, heat and fuel, new local skills and jobs, and more reliable and affordable renewable energy solutions in Africa.
Cooperation
Actions should contribute to the AU-EU research action on climate change and sustainable energy, in particular through the LEAP-SE project, align with Global Gateway activities and draw on lessons from the REFORMERS and CRETE VALLEY projects. Activities are expected to reach TRL 8.
