Sustainability and resilience of climate projections and related data records for European and global science and policy

What is this call about?

The topic funds one action that safeguards access to essential climate data and strengthens the Earth System Grid Federation in Europe and globally.

What does this call fund?

Scope

The topic funds one action that secures continued production, maintenance and open access to climate data, including observations and projections, and strengthens the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) in Europe and globally.

Activities

The action should address all of the following:

• tracking the availability of climate projections and related data, gaps and risks linked to geopolitical developments
• coordinating European solutions to secure access to data needed for IPCC, WCRP, CMIP, CORDEX and similar initiatives
• preparing a sustainable long-term European solution for ESGF, covering data access, architecture, interoperability, governance and service quality, and mobilising national investment
• a global coordination function to sustain data availability and redundancy, with attention to the most vulnerable countries

Further expectations

Engagement with national, European and international initiatives, exploring integration with research infrastructures prioritised by ESFRI, alignment with EOSC, and FAIR data management.

Expected outcomes

Stronger EU climate data sovereignty, timely input to IPCC and UNFCCC processes, and a more resilient ESGF with foundations for a long-term operational solution.

Further expectations

• The action should coordinate with projects funded under the related topics named in the work programme to avoid redundancies.
• International cooperation is strongly encouraged, especially for the global coordination component.
