What is this call about?

The call funds scientific and technical support to EFSA for the re-evaluation of approved food additives, covering calls for data, literature searches and systematic reviews. It is restricted to competent organisations designated by EU Member States under Article 36.

What does this call fund?

Scope

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) seeks scientific and technical assistance for its FIP Unit with the preparatory work for scientific outputs on food additives that remain to be re-evaluated under Regulation (EU) No 257/2010, and for their follow-up assessments. EFSA estimates that the additives listed in the call, including sweeteners such as sorbitol, mannitol, isomalt, maltitol, lactitol and xylitol, and substances such as acetic, lactic, malic, fumaric and citric acid and their salts, will lead to about 20 scientific opinions.

Work packages

  • WP 1: support for calls for data, including drafting call texts and compiling the responses and confidentiality claims into a report.
  • WP 2: support for literature reviews, including searches in Scifinder, PubMed and Web of Science (English-language publications only) and screening of references at title, abstract and full-text level.
  • WP 3: support for other steps of systematic reviews, such as relevance checks, risk-of-bias evaluation and weight-of-evidence tables.

How the grant works

The call leads to three framework partnership agreements in cascade, each with a single partner. Work is assigned through specific agreements, first offered to the highest-ranked partner. Payments are pre-defined sums per accepted deliverable, from €500 to €10,000 depending on complexity, and are not linked to actual costs. No co-financing and no estimated budget are needed. Tasks are generally carried out remotely and the working language is English.
