What is this call about?

The topic funds research and pilot sites that define and test Bioeconomy Places: regions and municipalities using sustainable bioeconomy solutions for local prosperity, including at least one site in Ukraine.

What does this call fund?

Scope

Bioeconomy Places are geographically defined areas, such as regions, groups of municipalities or cross-border areas, that use bioeconomy solutions for sustainable prosperity. Projects define what qualifies a place as a Bioeconomy Place and pilot the transition.

Activities

  • Develop definitions and benchmarks for a Bioeconomy Place label, building on the Regional Innovation Valleys for bioeconomy and food systems and the Circular Cities and Regions Initiative.
  • Set up at least three pilot sites and analyse their needs, strengths and opportunities, including infrastructure, value chains, consumer awareness and skills.
  • Prepare a transformation plan for each pilot site, covering partnerships with local actors, urban-rural links, training in technical and entrepreneurial skills, and support for preparing bankable projects.
  • Provide policy recommendations for deploying circular bioeconomy solutions.

Expected outcomes

More attractive places with more investment in bio-based sectors, new jobs and lower environmental impacts, and comparable, qualified Bioeconomy Places that share knowledge. Activities are expected to reach TRL 5 and may start at any TRL.
