Towards the next generation of frontier Artificial Intelligence models for healthcare
Horizon Europe · Cluster 1 – Health · HORIZON-HLTH-2027-03-TOOL-08
Funds one action building a European community, roadmap and dataset plan for frontier AI models in healthcare.
This call is announced but not open yet. Dates and conditions can still change.
What is this call about?
The topic funds one coordination and support action that builds a pan-European community, a roadmap and dataset plans for developing the next generation of frontier AI models for healthcare.
What does this call fund?
Scope
This coordination and support action lays the groundwork for the next generation of frontier AI models for healthcare, moving towards artificial general intelligence (AGI) for healthcare. It responds to the AI Continent Action Plan, which names health as a key strategic sector, and draws on growing access to multimodal health data, including through the European Health Data Space, and to high-performance computing such as AI Factories.
Expected activities
The consortium should be multidisciplinary, with broad stakeholder representation (for example healthcare professionals, patients, biomedical scientists, AI developers, data engineers and ethics experts), and carry out all of the following:
- Community building: create a large, diverse pan-European community able to develop frontier AI models for healthcare and use AI Factories, building on existing EU-funded networks where relevant.
- Roadmap creation: review the most promising AI models and approaches, assess risks and evidence on safety and efficacy in light of the AI Act and ethical and security considerations, and produce a development roadmap.
- Datasets: identify suitable existing datasets, define how to validate, curate and convert them, identify additional data and annotations needed for representativeness, and set out methods and infrastructure for privacy-preserving use in line with the European Health Data Space.
- Preparatory work on models: map approaches to training and evaluating frontier AI models, for example combining foundation models for life sciences and healthcare, covering all aspects of trustworthy AI.
The action should take into account results of related EU projects on generative AI in health and use AI Factories, health data infrastructures, biobanks and research infrastructure consortia.
Expected outcomes
- Researchers and innovators better understand how to develop and use frontier AI models for healthcare and how to use heterogeneous multimodal health data.
- Stakeholders have a jointly created roadmap towards AGI for healthcare.
