What does this call fund?

Scope

The topic covers small-scale fisheries, recreational fisheries and aquaculture farms classified as SMEs, in fresh, brackish and marine waters, including small mollusc, seaweed and fish farms, urban aquaculture and aquaponics. Projects advance knowledge and develop tools, including nature-based solutions, to manage and develop small-scale aquatic food production.

Activities

  • Combine natural science and technical know-how with social sciences and humanities, which may include local traditions of aquatic food production and consumption.
  • Develop methods to assess the environmental and socio-economic contribution of small-scale actors to local communities, possibly using citizen science, social media and AI or big data analytics.
  • Address climate change effects and the potential contribution of the sector to mitigation and adaptation, as well as environmental services and ecological footprint.
  • Consider aquatic animal welfare where relevant.
  • Focus on knowledge transfer, training and capacity building for small-scale actors and policymakers.

Expected outcomes

Better business models, value chain integration and market access for small producers, locally produced and safe aquatic food for consumers, more resilient coastal, rural and urban communities, and a more competitive and sustainable aquatic food sector.
