Scope
The topic funds early-stage clinical trials of innovative interventions for neurodegenerative diseases. An intervention should combine a therapeutic solution based on an active substance with a complementary multidisciplinary approach, such as lifestyle changes, cognitive training or rehabilitation therapies. Rare neurodegenerative diseases are excluded. For pharmacological interventions, phase 1 and/or phase 2 trials apply.
Activities
Proposals should address most of the following:
- Rigorous early-stage trials on safety, efficacy and mode of administration, with adequate cohorts representing the patient population by age, sex and ethnicity.
- Insight into the mechanisms of action, for example through imaging and physiological, molecular or omics signatures, possibly leading to surrogate endpoints and more personalised approaches.
- Use or development of technologies, including AI and wearables, to monitor long-term efficacy and disease progression.
- Use of existing data, biobanks, registries and cohorts, with new data managed under FAIR principles.
- Engagement of patients, caregivers, clinicians and regulators, and use of European research infrastructures.
- Engagement with national public health authorities and regulators.
Projects should liaise with the future European Partnership for Brain Health and should budget for regular joint meetings with other funded projects. The topic requires an effective contribution from the social sciences and humanities.
