Integrated Production and Product Development for Next-Generation Lithium-based Batteries for Mobility (BATT4EU and Made in Europe Partnerships)
Horizon Europe · Cluster 5 – Climate, Energy and Mobility · HORIZON-CL5-2026-10-D2-03
Scale-up of next-generation lithium batteries from cell prototypes to pilot production and pack demonstration.
Esta convocatoria está cerrada. La página sigue publicada como referencia.
¿De qué trata esta convocatoria?
The topic funds projects that scale next-generation lithium-based batteries from cell prototypes to pilot production and pack-level demonstration for one transport mode. It supports the EU battery value chain and manufacturing equipment.
¿Qué financia esta convocatoria?
Scope
The topic supports scaling up next-generation lithium-based batteries, beyond generation 3 (for example semi and all-solid state, generation 5), from cell prototypes at technology readiness level 4-5 to demonstration of scalable production and of cell integration into modules and packs. Projects cover pilot production, process automation, system integration and demonstration, advanced cell design and supply chain development. Each project must address a single, strategically relevant transport mode, clearly stated in the proposal: automotive, aviation, rail or waterborne.
Production targets
Projects are expected to cover all of the following:
- Upscaling of component production, including optimised pilot-scale integration of anode and cathode materials compatible with next-generation electrolytes.
- Cell concepts, manufacturing equipment and machinery: flexible, high-throughput processing for large-scale cell production (for example laser patterning, vacuum sintering and advanced calendaring) and next-generation machinery such as solid electrolyte deposition tools and high-precision stacking machines.
- Design and demonstration of modules and packs in vehicles or relevant environments, with module and pack design, sensors and battery management systems for cell-to-system integration and regulatory compliance, and comprehensive validation of performance, durability and safety under realistic conditions, including thermal management, mechanical stress, vibration and electrical performance.
Expected outcomes
Projects must meet cell- and system-level performance targets for the chosen application, with key indicators defined for energy density, power density, C-rate, cycle life and cost under operational conditions. They should boost EU competitiveness in next-generation mobility batteries, develop pilot manufacturing capability, strengthen the EU battery value chain including equipment and automation, and advance understanding of battery interfaces at industrial scale. For aviation, battery requirements should be compatible at least with EASA CS.23 (level 4) and CS.27, and preferably with CS.25.
Other requirements
The Commission Safe and Sustainable by Design framework is the reference for assessing chemicals and materials. Exploitation plans should include preliminary plans for scalability, commercialisation and deployment, with a feasibility study, a business plan and possible funding sources such as the Innovation Fund. Involvement of the Joint Research Centre in battery performance or safety research may be considered. The topic implements the Batteries (Batt4EU) and Made in Europe partnerships, and projects are expected to report results to them. Activities are expected to reach technology readiness level 6-7 by the end of the project.
