Scope
The topic funds early-stage clinical trials that validate new or refined healthcare interventions for the treatment and management of four non-communicable diseases: cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases and chronic kidney diseases. Other diseases are out of scope. Interventions may be pharmacological, non-pharmacological or combined; for pharmacological interventions, phase 1 and/or phase 2 trials apply.
Requirements for proposals
Proposals should address all of the following:
- Rigorous early-stage clinical trials backed by completed proof of concept of clinical safety and efficacy; preclinical research and the draft trial protocol should be complete at submission, with evidence of preliminary consultation with ethics and regulatory authorities and a sound feasibility assessment.
- Attention to sex and gender differences and other stratification criteria, and to co- and multimorbidities where relevant.
- Use or development of technologies, including AI and wearables, to monitor long-term efficacy and disease progression, with interoperable hardware and software.
- Use of existing data, biobanks, registries and cohorts, with new data managed under FAIR principles.
- Engagement of patients, caregivers, clinicians, regulators and national public health authorities.
- A health-economic assessment and analysis of real-world data.
Comparative effectiveness studies are out of scope. Projects are encouraged to join networking activities and should budget for regular joint meetings. The topic requires an effective contribution from the social sciences and humanities.
Expected outcomes
- Researchers and clinicians gain knowledge, data, tools and methods to develop interventions that reduce the burden of these diseases.
- Validated interventions advance clinical practice and patient care.
- Policymakers, regulators and patient organisations are informed of the requirements for wide implementation.
