Scope

The topic funds research on preventing adverse drug reactions in patients who take three or more medicinal products at the same time. Projects should use health technologies and data analytics, including electronic health records and decision support systems, to integrate medication management into healthcare practice, and identify and validate biomarkers for better patient stratification and early detection of reactions.

Aspects every project should address

• Use pharmacogenomics, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to predict and prevent adverse reactions to multiple medications, and propose personalised approaches such as targeted therapies and biomarker-driven treatment.
• Use electronic health records, artificial intelligence and clinical decision support systems to support safe medication use.
• Address the ethical, regulatory and implementation challenges of bringing personalised medicine into clinical practice.
• Generate evidence on the clinical utility and cost-effectiveness of biomarker-guided treatment for single drugs and drug combinations.
• Develop strategies, including regulatory science approaches, to bring results into daily healthcare.
• Align with related EU projects and partnerships, such as the European Partnership for Personalised Medicine, while avoiding overlaps.

Projects should examine differences across populations, including sex differences, and share data with relevant stakeholders and the European Medicines Agency. De-escalation studies may also be considered.

Expected outcomes

Fewer adverse drug reactions and better health outcomes for patients, prevention strategies that healthcare professionals can adopt, cost savings for healthcare systems, evidence for revised guidelines, and better education on polypharmacy for providers and patients.
