Supporting sustainable and smart urban mobility in Europe (CIVITAS)

The topic funds one coordination and support action that spreads innovative urban mobility results to cities and runs the CIVITAS community, including its networks, events and website.

Scope

This coordination and support action addresses the barriers to deploying the results of innovative urban mobility projects: fragmented support to cities across regional, national and EU level, limited resources for experimentation, insufficient knowledge of research results, and difficulty exchanging experience and giving feedback to policy makers and researchers. It builds on the previous CIVITAS coordination action and avoids overlaps with the Cities Mission Platform and other initiatives. CIVITAS has acted since 2002 as an open platform for research, uptake of innovation, validation of results and exchange of good practice in urban mobility.

Activities

The project should address all of the following:

• Harvesting and spreading innovative urban mobility solutions: a capacity building and replication programme with twinning, mutual learning and peer-to-peer exchange, involving industry, SMEs and start-ups and feeding back to policy; an optimised, user-friendly CIVITAS project evaluation framework with support for the projects using it; and an improved CIVITAS website as the main knowledge platform for the European urban mobility community.
• Developing the urban mobility community in the EU and Associated Countries: supporting the Educational and Youth network, the national CIVITAS networks (CIVINETS), clustering of research and innovation projects and living lab activities; organising the CIVITAS Forum and the CIVITAS Politicians Exchange Forum and supporting the Urban Mobility Days under Commission guidance; facilitating exchange between cities, public transport authorities and industry; and enlarging the CIVITAS network.

Expected outcomes

• Valorisation, cross-fertilisation and dissemination of innovative sustainable urban mobility solutions from EU and national projects through CIVITAS.
• Faster deployment of innovative urban mobility solutions, raising the competitiveness of European mobility actors while serving mobility policy objectives.
• Cities equipped with the knowledge and the soft and technical skills to deploy smart and sustainable mobility solutions for passengers and freight.
• A vibrant community of urban mobility innovation stakeholders that is maintained and strengthened.
