The call funds demonstrations at operational industrial sites that recover excess heat and convert it into mechanical or electrical power, designed for replication across the same industrial sector.

Scope

This Horizon Innovation Action supports the recovery of industrial excess or waste heat and its conversion back to mechanical or electrical power, which can improve energy efficiency and, combined with storage, offer flexible electricity generation for the grid.

Required activities

• Develop and validate novel heat recovery and conversion systems.
• Demonstrate heat recovery and conversion physically at one or more operational industrial sites, possibly combined with energy storage.
• Survey and analyse the needs of factories in the same industrial sector across the EU and Associated Countries before design, to maximise replicability.
• Identify, optimise and standardise common components.
• Develop open technical and economic guidelines and tools for integrating the systems into existing plant control and energy management systems, and business models for heat valorisation as flexible grid power.
• Disseminate results, including to Cluster 4 public-private partnerships.

Expected outcomes

At least one industrial sector with significant heat demand develops pathways and business models to increase heat recovery and conversion to power, with measurable gains in efficiency, flexibility, environmental protection, safety, security and profitability. Activities are expected to reach TRL 7-8 by the end of the project.
