Scope
Solutions to transform the existing built environment in line with the New European Bauhaus have so far mostly been small and individual. The topic funds innovation projects that make offsite manufactured modular construction components customisable at scale, so that renovation and adaptation of existing buildings and spaces is efficient and affordable while reflecting local needs, cultural heritage and aesthetics.
Expected activities
- Develop a solution for mass customisation of offsite manufactured modular components using technologies such as distributed manufacturing, building information modelling (BIM) and modular construction approaches.
- Demonstrate the solution in an operational environment in at least three Member States and/or Associated Countries.
- Address the needs of at least three application areas through mass customisation, such as residential, commercial, public space, cultural heritage, education or recreation.
- Evaluate the economic, aesthetic, environmental, social and cultural value and the business case for investment.
- Develop strategies to scale up and adapt the solution to local contexts, considering long-term performance, durability in changing climates and repairability.
Expected outcomes
Uptake of mass-customised modular components by construction and renovation stakeholders, with much less waste and lower environmental impacts, including on air quality, noise and transport, and stronger local cultural heritage and aesthetics than with conventional modular components.
