Worum geht es in dieser Ausschreibung?
The topic funds one action that develops and demonstrates next-generation quantum key distribution systems, integrates them with existing networks and post-quantum cryptography, and validates them in real use cases.
Was fördert diese Ausschreibung?
Scope
The action supports applied research and development on advanced quantum key distribution (QKD) systems and their integration into future secure communication networks, strengthening Europe's strategic autonomy in quantum-secure communications. It should avoid overlap with EuroQCI deployment and builds on the QSNP framework partnership, in line with SRIA 2030, the Quantum Europe Strategy and EuroQCI.
Required activities
- Develop and experimentally validate advanced QKD protocols and systems, such as continuous-variable, measurement-device-independent or device-independent, and twin-field QKD.
- Integrate QKD into classical and optical network infrastructure: compatibility with routers and switches, interfaces for software-defined networking and network function virtualisation, and enterprise-grade key management.
- Demonstrate hybrid QKD and post-quantum cryptography frameworks in at least two realistic, demanding use cases.
- Validate security performance through benchmarks and verification methods, and develop interoperable, certifiable hardware and software components such as quantum random number generators, integrated photonic components and single-photon detectors.
- Provide cloud-accessible interfaces to QKD resources and set up at least one demonstrator with end users in a live operational setting.
- Contribute to standards and certification, and engage with industry and national network operators.
The action may also research and make first demonstrations of quantum communication protocols beyond QKD.
Expected outcomes
- Next-generation QKD systems with measurable improvement in one of: key rate above 1 Mbps over metropolitan distances, regional network coverage above 300 km for fibre-based QKD, or advanced protocols beyond QKD with provable security advantages.
- Validated QKD security in use cases such as critical infrastructure monitoring, long-term secure cloud storage, industrial control systems and multi-site enterprise communications.
- A stronger European supply chain of certifiable, standardised and scalable QKD components.
