The call funds research and innovation actions that use palaeoclimate records and models to understand past climate change, thresholds and tipping points, and to improve Earth system models.

Scope

Palaeoclimate records (geological, biological and ice-core) show how the climate behaved during warm and cold periods, deglaciations and abrupt events. The topic funds research that turns such records into robust information on climate states and events beyond the range of recent centuries, to guide Earth system model development.

Activities (projects take up some of these)

• Produce and aggregate high-resolution, well-dated and interoperable palaeoclimate records in databases, and quantify their uncertainties
• Develop Earth system models whose outputs can be compared more directly with palaeo data, across timescales from years to millennia
• Reconstruct short- to long-term climate evolution and natural variability from different proxies
• Identify climate-related and ecological tipping points and their consequences using palaeo data and model experiments

Projects should rely on data from scientific drilling or coring, sediment records, tree-ring records and other suitable sources.

Expected outcomes

Better understanding of past climate changes and their interaction with ecosystems, future scenarios informed by past warm and high sea-level periods and abrupt transitions, identification of thresholds and early warning signals, and syntheses that can support IPCC assessments and model intercomparisons.
