The call funds research projects on additive manufacturing and circular design of aircraft and engine components, including repair, maintenance and recycling. It aims to strengthen sustainable aviation manufacturing in the EU and Associated Countries.

Scope

This Horizon Research and Innovation Action addresses open challenges in additive design and manufacturing of metal, high-performance polymer and composite aircraft and engine parts, including residual stresses, phase transformations, joining, defects and reproducibility.

Focus of proposals

• Real, challenging industrial use cases for the circular design of individual components.
• Joining technologies and improved maintenance and repair methods that extend aircraft lifetime.
• Better recovery of high-quality recycled materials.
• Real-time condition monitoring and inspection for engines and safety-critical systems, enabling repairs on-wing and on-site instead of energy-intensive overhauls.

Expected outcomes

Additive manufacturing of high-performance polymers, composites and metals with clearly better performance than the state of the art, covering design, manufacturing, characterisation, testing and certification, and circular design and manufacturing of high-value components moving towards deployment in the EU and Associated Countries.

Further expectations

• Proposals are expected to build on previous research such as H2020-SUSTAINair and EREA Future Sky initiatives on circular aviation.
