Quel est l’objet de cet appel ?

The call funds research and innovation actions that improve understanding of carbon uptake and release by oceans and land and reconcile different estimates of land-use CO2 emissions.

Que finance cet appel ?

Scope

Understanding how land (including inland waters) and oceans absorb and release carbon is essential for climate models and mitigation strategies. Each proposal is expected to address only one of three areas and should state it clearly:

  • Area A, ocean CO2 sources and sinks: how the ocean sink behaves under past, present and future conditions and emission scenarios, and the biophysical potential and effects of marine mitigation such as carbon dioxide removal
  • Area B, land CO2 sources and sinks: the natural and human drivers of past land carbon fluxes, better quantification today and projections under climate and land-use scenarios
  • Area C, reconciling land-use CO2 emission estimates: aligning the figures used by climate science and by national emissions reporting, taking lateral carbon transfers into account

Expected outcomes

Better understanding of ocean and land CO2 sources and sinks and their drivers, progress in reconciling estimates of human-caused land emissions and removals, and more consistent quantification of lateral carbon transfers.

Cooperation

Projects should coordinate on data, scenarios and models. Selected consortia will be asked to coordinate with ESA FutureEO projects and should budget for this. The Joint Research Centre may be involved, and international cooperation, in particular with low- and middle-income countries, is encouraged.
