Detection, monitoring, modelling, and attribution capabilities for Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) activities and assessing their impacts on Earth's climate and ecosystems
Horizon Europe · HORIZON-BRIDGING-2027-04-11
Funding for research to detect, monitor and attribute solar radiation modification activities and support their governance.
Quel est l’objet de cet appel ?
The topic funds one research project that builds capacity to detect, monitor and attribute solar radiation modification activities, supporting evidence-based international governance.
Que finance cet appel ?
Scope
The topic funds research that strengthens the ability to detect, monitor and attribute solar radiation modification (SRM) research, innovation or deployment activities, to support evidence-based governance. Support must not be used to advocate, promote or develop SRM, and field experiments and technical or operational SRM research are out of scope.
Activities
- detection, monitoring and attribution capabilities using space-borne, ground-based, airborne and in-situ data, including social and media data
- high-fidelity modelling of aerosol-cloud interactions for stratospheric aerosol injection, marine cloud brightening and cirrus or mixed-phase cloud thinning
- groundwork for an ecological early-warning system on SRM-induced changes affecting photosynthesis, marine production and sensitive habitats
- a transdisciplinary approach linking technical disciplines and the humanities
Transparency and engagement
The project must meet a very high standard of transparency and involve citizens and civil society in co-designing and assessing the work; it should set up a steering or advisory board with a global dimension and follow FAIR data principles, and must make the widest possible use of Creative Commons licences.
Expected outcomes
Robust evidence for EU, Member State and associated country policy and for IPCC assessments, and a scientific basis for a global SRM governance framework.
