Development of predictive biomarkers of disease progression and treatment response by using AI methodologies for chronic non-communicable diseases
Horizon Europe · Cluster 1 – Health · HORIZON-HLTH-2027-02-TOOL-01-TWO-STAGE
Funds AI-based development and clinical validation of predictive biomarkers for chronic non-communicable diseases other than cancer.
Quel est l’objet de cet appel ?
The topic funds collaborative projects that apply established AI methods to develop and clinically validate predictive biomarkers of progression and treatment response for chronic non-communicable diseases other than cancer.
Que finance cet appel ?
Scope
The topic funds collaborative projects that use established AI methods to develop and clinically validate multimodal predictive biomarkers of disease progression and treatment response for chronic non-communicable diseases, excluding cancer. Biomarkers may combine molecular, cellular, physiological, imaging, behavioural and digital markers.
Expected activities
- Set up a multidisciplinary collaboration to map and evaluate biomarkers used in clinical practice and candidate biomarkers from past and ongoing studies, including stratification by biological sex and, where feasible, gender and sociodemographic factors.
- Adapt and apply established AI methods, rather than building new ones from scratch, to integrate biomarker data with longitudinal clinical and real-world data; applicants should show that suitable high-quality clinical data are readily available.
- Use AI and other integration methods to prioritise biomarkers by patient characteristics, disease stage and treatment response, with a strong focus on trustworthy AI, performance metrics and bias assessment, plus user-friendly decision-support tools for clinicians.
- Establish a biomarker validation platform with clinical validation studies in independent cohorts, real-world data and exploratory clinical studies.
- Prepare an exploitation plan and a regulatory strategy for qualification of the biomarkers and/or AI tools, prioritising exploitation in the EU.
Proposals should apply good practices for GDPR-compliant data protection and should budget for networking and joint activities with other projects.
Expected outcomes
- Researchers and clinicians use validated predictive biomarkers for more effective clinical research and personalised medicine.
- Stakeholders have trustworthy AI tools for developing more accurate multimodal biomarkers.
- Citizens benefit from improved clinical guidelines and better health outcomes.
