Scope
The topic belongs to the call "Beautiful, inclusive and sustainable neighbourhoods for communities". The design of public spaces shapes how they work, power dynamics and the sense of belonging. The topic funds new methods, such as research-by-design, security-by-design or life-centric design, that bring inhabitants' diverse perspectives into the design and planning of public space while speeding up its green transition.
What proposals are expected to do
- Assess how spatial design shapes gendered, age-related and identity-related patterns of use, for example mobility, safety and access, and how inclusive design can meet diverse needs.
- Develop one approach to designing and planning public space using innovative methods that analyse underlying values and stakeholder relations, use co-creation with inhabitants and the cultural, creative and educational sectors, address climate and water resilience, civil security and biodiversity, assess how users perceive the beauty of spaces, and can be adapted and scaled.
- Demonstrate the approach in at least three neighbourhoods (urban, peri-urban and rural) in different Member States and/or Associated Countries.
- Develop plans and recommendations for take-up, including other uses of the approach and skills needs and gaps.
Expected outcomes
- Architects, designers, planners and local decision makers can integrate user perspectives efficiently in the design or transformation of public spaces.
- Positive climate, environmental, social and cultural impact, such as addressing inequalities, stronger social cohesion and a greater sense of security and belonging.
Approach
Projects are expected to be participatory and transdisciplinary, with an effective contribution from social sciences and humanities. At least 0.8% of the budget is expected to go to engagement with the New European Bauhaus hub for results and impact.
