Scope

The topic funds implementation research on evidence-based programmes and policies for the prevention, diagnosis, screening and management of chronic non-communicable diseases in children and young people aged 1 to 24, living in low- and middle-income countries and/or in underserved populations in high-income countries. It is launched together with other members of the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD) and aligned with the 12th GACD call.

Possible focus areas

  • Evaluating policies that address social, economic, political, structural or commercial determinants of these diseases.
  • Prevention strategies targeted at children and young people, such as education, vaccination or lifestyle change.
  • Screening and diagnosis, in particular using digital tools.
  • Cost-effective, patient-centred management, including access to medicines, integrated care and continuity of care for adolescents moving out of paediatric services.

Any chronic non-communicable condition or risk factor may be addressed, including mental health, autoimmune, musculoskeletal, neurological and sleep disorders.

Expected activities

  • A clear implementation research methodology, including statistical design and measurement of implementation and real-world effectiveness outcomes.

  • A multidisciplinary team with equitable partnership and shared leadership between high-income and low- and middle-income country members, and/or between non-Indigenous and Indigenous members.
  • A stakeholder engagement strategy and a pathway to sustain the intervention after the grant.
  • Capacity building for early career researchers, with at least one early career co-investigator.

Out of scope

Standalone feasibility projects, epidemiological cohorts, aetiological or mechanistic research (unless essential to the implementation study) and efficacy trials of new or established drugs or behavioural interventions are not in scope.
