The topic funds coordination and support projects that engage young people and the wider public in research and improve scientific literacy. Each proposal addresses one of two areas.

Scope

The topic promotes ERA policies and practices that strengthen links between science and society and improve scientific literacy. Applicants choose one of two areas and should reach large, geographically diverse and inclusive communities of stakeholders.

Area 1: Youth, science and democracy

• Engage young people in different countries in participatory science on complex social issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss or energy poverty, including those not usually involved in science.
• Create communities of practice of engagement experts, science communicators, youth organisations, researchers and policymakers to co-develop handbooks and guidelines.
• Recommend common ERA approaches to engaging young people in R&I.

Area 2: Scaling up science engagement at EU level

• Develop online dialogue platforms, in different national languages, where researchers offer public visits and organisations can arrange meetings.
• Hold visits by researchers to civil society organisations, workplaces or youth centres, reaching people not usually involved in science.
• Take stock of all visits and recommend how to develop similar activities.

Expected outcomes

Innovative ways to engage young people, national engagement initiatives scaled to ERA level, stronger cooperation between researchers and civil society, and a better public understanding of scientific processes.
