Scope
Research should treat schools as places for practising participation and for intergenerational dialogue. It should examine how students and families can foster a democratic culture through school activities, within primary and/or secondary education; projects choose the age group.
Research areas
- The role of socio-emotional learning in handling sensitive topics and in developing civic agency, including the emotions that drive civic engagement.
- The role of families, mainly parents and caregivers, in building the civic identity of children and young people, and how to engage families from diverse cultural, migrant and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Families' and students' views on citizenship education content and the role of curriculum design in inclusive civic engagement.
- The effectiveness of student councils and other participatory mechanisms, including motives for participation and non-participation, and how they are monitored and evaluated.
Pilots
Research should include pilots or living labs that develop innovative participation practices in schools, run together with schools and education authorities. Schools in marginalised areas or with high migrant populations may receive particular attention.
Expected outcomes
Policymakers, education and training institutions and educators receive evidence, toolkits and recommendations on cooperation with families, a better understanding of student participatory mechanisms and family involvement, and frameworks and tools to evaluate socio-emotional learning in citizenship education.
