Scope
AI is increasingly used in pre-primary and primary education, but evidence on its effects is limited, often comes from outside the EU and covers small samples and short periods. Research should explore how AI can improve curricula, teaching methods and personalised learning, while considering the developmental appropriateness of AI tools for young children and their cognitive, emotional and social growth. It should also cover teacher support (lesson planning, assessment, feedback, administrative tasks), training for educators, inclusion and accessibility, and the devices through which children encounter AI.
Methods
- Longitudinal, multi-year studies on long-term cognitive, social and emotional impacts.
- Experimental or quasi-experimental methods, experience sampling and surveys to evaluate existing or new AI tools, such as generative AI and intelligent tutoring systems.
- Qualitative methods covering ethical aspects, and evaluation of the costs of the measures analysed.
Expected outcomes
- Policymakers, educators and parents understand the benefits, opportunities, challenges and ethical aspects of AI in early education.
- Rigorous evidence on the impact of AI tools on educational performance and youth well-being.
- Practical advice for educators on using AI tools effectively, including for assessing learning outcomes.
