The call funds international networks of universities, research organisations, businesses and other actors that jointly run doctoral training programmes. Networks may lead to Industrial or Joint Doctorates.
Kaj ta razpis financira?
Scope
MSCA Doctoral Networks implement doctoral programmes run by partnerships of universities, research institutions and infrastructures, businesses including SMEs and other socio-economic actors from different countries in Europe and beyond. Organisations from third countries may take part. Programmes respond to identified needs in research and innovation areas and expose doctoral candidates to both academic and non-academic sectors.
Industrial and Joint Doctorates
- Industrial Doctorates: candidates are jointly supervised by academic and non-academic organisations, which may be established in the same EU Member State or Associated Country.
- Joint Doctorates: highly integrated international, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary training leading to joint, double or multiple doctoral degrees recognised in at least one EU Member State or Associated Country.
Training and supervision
- Original research on personalised projects, following the EU Principles for Innovative Doctoral Training.
- Training in transferable skills, including digital skills, Open Science, knowledge valorisation, entrepreneurship, intellectual property and research integrity.
- Inter-sectoral secondments, including to third countries, where relevant.
- A supervisory board coordinating training, research and supervision across the network; joint supervision is mandatory for Industrial and Joint Doctorates.
- A Career Development Plan for each candidate, revised within 18 months.
Expected outcomes
Better skills, employability and career prospects for doctoral candidates, and for organisations higher-quality doctoral training, stronger cooperation across sectors and disciplines and greater internationalisation.

- Doctoral Networks are partnerships of universities, research institutions, research infrastructures, businesses including SMEs and other socio-economic actors from different countries across Europe and beyond.
- Organisations from third countries may participate.
- For Industrial Doctorates, joint supervision by an academic and a non-academic organisation is mandatory.
- Selection of doctoral candidates must be open, transparent and merit-based, in line with the European Charter for Researchers.
